Mission Statement

 

The Sankofa Fund for Civic Engagement is a membership organization committed to funding and supporting organizations, projects and efforts which improve Chattanooga's communities of color.

 

The fund is housed at the Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga. Members commit to donating an annual gift to the fund and collectively make funding decisions.

The Sankofa Fund for Civic Engagement  is committed to funding and supporting organizations, projects and efforts which improve Chattanooga's communities of color. The Sankofa Fund is grounded in the belief that in order for positive and sustainable change to take place in the Chattanooga community, it must strengthen its efforts to be self-determining.
 
Therefore, Sankofa provides support to community led efforts to develop and implement innovative solutions to the challenges within our community. Sankofa officially launched in 2015 with the goals to educate its members about the benefits of collective philanthropy, increase awareness of local needs, make investments in organizations that are directly impacting African American children, youth and families, and create a legacy of giving in African American communities as an effective vehicle for social change.

There is a long history of philanthropy in Chattanooga's African American community. Our group, which consists of 20 founding members, met in late summer 2015 and decided to use our diverse professional backgrounds, understanding of the city, and money to be a resource to supporters of Chattanooga and its black community.
